Some places earn a reputation one bagel at a time. Bagel Shack on Route 17 in Mahwah has done exactly that, drawing regulars from Ramsey, Allendale, and towns beyond who make the drive specifically because they know the difference between a real bagel and a flat, forgettable one.

The bagels here have the chew and crust that only come from doing it right: proper hydration, proper bake, no shortcuts. Customers consistently rank this among the top three bagel shops in North Jersey, and the 4.7-star rating across hundreds of reviews backs that up. The shop opens at 5 AM every day of the week, which means whether you're grabbing breakfast before a commute or feeding the family on a slow Sunday morning, the doors are open and the ovens are already ahead of you.

The space is clean, the staff keeps things moving, and the menu covers everything from a classic bacon, egg, and cheese to stacked deli sandwiches and fresh coffee. It's the kind of place that earns repeat customers not through gimmicks, but through consistency.

What We Offer

The menu at Bagel Shack is built around what a great bagel shop should actually do well. Start with the fresh-baked bagels themselves, available in a full range of varieties, plain through everything, sesame, poppy, cinnamon raisin, and more. Pair one with cream cheese or step up to a hot breakfast sandwich loaded with egg, meat, and melted cheese.

Beyond breakfast, the deli menu carries through the afternoon with cold cuts, specialty sandwiches, and made-to-order options that make it just as easy to grab lunch as it is to start your morning here. Coffee and hot drinks round out every order, so you can walk out with a full meal in hand. The shop runs Monday through Saturday until 4 PM and Sunday until 3 PM, giving you a solid window to stop in whenever the day allows.

"Easily one of the top three bagel spots in North Jersey. I live a few towns away and this is where I go for a real bagel. They are baked to perfection. Highly recommend you try them. Clean restrooms and high-top tables. It’s a full service deli too."

"Genuinely just had the most frustrating food experience I’ve had in months. I’ve been to this place 3 times. This 3rd time is the last. First time I got a bacon, egg, and cheese on a plain bagel. That was ok, nothing spectacular. I didn’t come back for a while, but I like supporting small business so I gave them another chance after a few weeks. I went again and ordered the same thing. This time was much better. I guess they improved the way they prepare their food. This 3rd time just plain pissed me off. I ordered the French toast platter. If you look at the menu it says platters come with eggs, bacon, and home fries. Guess what? This one apparently doesn’t. Can you imagine my surprise when I got my order and there were just 3 measly pieces of French toast on an aluminum plate. I thought it was a mistake. No biggie, they happen. . But the cashier informed me that they don’t come with any of that. So I just paid $8.50 for 3 pieces of French toast that I 100% could have made at home and better. To top it off, they were burned. Not badly, but enough so that I had to pick at my food and work around the burn pieces. Looks crispy in the picture right? It’s not. Those are pieces of burned whatever. Not going here again anytime soon. Pretty obvious when the staff shows differential treatment to other customers too."

"Here’s your foodie-style review with that part added in naturally about the bagels not being flat: ⸻ I saw a couple negative reviews floating around and honestly I think they either hit the wrong spot or they’re just salty competitors. From the second I walked in I was like whoa. The place is gorgeous, spotless, and has that “I could hang out here all day” kind of vibe. The staff were super friendly and really on point with everyone coming through the door. I rolled in around noon on October 1st and grabbed a whitefish salad sandwich with lettuce, tomato, and onion on a garlic bagel. Yes, I snapped a pic. And wow, easily one of the best bagel sandwiches I’ve ever had. Fluffy, massive, and absolutely loaded. I saw someone say in a review that the bagels here were flat—absolutely not true. Mine was a beast, perfectly baked, soft and fluffy, and piled high. Honestly felt like I could’ve made two sandwiches out of it. What stood out most was the vibe behind the counter. It looked like some of the owners were there running things, and they were super professional but also just good energy all around. Positive with their employees too, which as a fellow food business owner, I really noticed. Now the coffee. I don’t say this lightly, but it was one of the best cups I’ve ever had. Rich, nutty, smooth, just perfect. And it wasn’t even flavored, just straight up good coffee. I didn’t even know this spot existed until now and I wish I had found it sooner. Parking was easy even with some construction going on. The menu has plenty of options, and the prices are almost too good to be true. $9.99 for that monster of a sandwich, while other places like Goldbergs charges double for half the size."

"Just discovered this gem of a bagel shop, and I’m already planning my next visit. The bagels here are incredibly fluffy—think soft and pillowy on the inside, with just the right amount of chew and a golden, satisfying crust. These aren’t your average grocery store bagels; they’re thick, hearty, and clearly made with care. You can really taste the freshness. We bought 6 plain bagels and two ice coffees for our first visit, and it was great!!! The staff are super friendly, they greet you as you walk in, and it was smooth and efficient ordering processing all under 6 minutes. If you're looking for bagels that feel substantial, comforting, and freshly made, this place is worth the visit. A new favorite in Bergen County, NJ!"
